Evidently there are some confident chili chefs out there, already proclaiming victory in the upcoming Surfrider “Lip-Rippin’ Chilympics Chili Cookoff” to be held Sunday, October 16 at the Hot Fish Club in Murrells Inlet. Billy Wright, a participant in last years event and winner of 2 medals, has started the verbal assault, informing other interested chili chefs to “not waste their time”.
Curt Hein, last year’s “Chili Master”, has informed us that he will be changing his chili recipe, “just to give the other saps a chance”. This year will mark the 6th year of the Chilympics. The popularity of the event is due to a few factors: a great venue (Hot Fish Club), awesome entertainment (live bluegrass, folk and rock), the Miss Red Hot Chili Pepper contest, and some of the most unique (and tasty) chili recipes ever. This chili cookoff is not a “sanctioned” event, meaning: there is (almost) no restrictions on what you can put in your chili. This format has produced some of the most unique chili dishes that has ever touched the tongue. There will be six categories of chili (vegetarian, hottest, most original, Best Restaurant, People’s choice, and Best Overall).
The cookoff begins at noon and runs until dark. The event is free and open to the public. So if you, or someone you know, makes “the best chili ever” (or you just want to participate for the fun of it), email us at mail@surfridergrandstrand.org, or call Bruxanne at 333-2034.
