The 8th Annual Makai Luau, a Grand Strand tradition, will be held June 9th, 2012 at the Hot Fish Club located in beautiful Murrells Inlet, SC.

The ticket only benefit begins at 6 p.m. on the lawn of the Hot Fish Club and will feature music from Da Howlies of Wilmington, NC, a fire and hula show from Chief Kamu, an inlet-style luau buffet cooked and served by the infamous Bubba Love, beverages from New South Brewing Company and Barefoot Wine, as well as the wildly popular Surfers Punch.

Surfrider has partnered with Creekside Cab who will provide cab rides to our guests from the Hot Fish Club, and donate 20% of the fares they receive for the evening back to Surfrider.

Additionally, author Chris Dixon will be on hand with copies of his book “Ghost Wave: The Discovery of Cortes Bank and the Biggest Wave on Earth”.

This year’s event will also feature prizes for the Ugliest Hawaiian Shirt contest, a Best Lei contest, a limbo contest, and a surfboard will be given away to one lucky ticket holder. An after-party will be held at the Hot Fish Club gazebo at 10:30 p.m. featuring surf rock from Wilmington’s favorite The Noseriders (no cover charge).

All proceeds from this event and others fund the projects of the Grand Strand Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, a grassroots, non-profit, environmental organization that works to protect our oceans, waves, and beaches. The Grand Strand Chapter is comprised entirely of volunteers and serves the entire Grand Strand from Little River to Pawleys Island, encompassing both Horry and Georgetown counties. Our chapter works to keep our beaches and waves clean, educate the public, and protect beach access. The 2012 EARTH DAY Music Fest & Expo will be Saturday, April 21 at the Grand Park at Market Commons. The event will be from 11:00am – 6pm, and will include a great lineup of local and regional music, a health and wellness expo, a Kidz Zone, the SC Fitness Challenge, interactive and educational exhibits, art and craft vendors, and the Gordon Biersch Beer Garden.  Learn how to protect the planet and have fun at the same time!

Also, the Wellness Council for SC will be holding its first Denim Drive, so bring your old jeans, denim jackets, shirts, etc to The Wellness Council booth.  The donations will be recycled into non-toxic insulation to be used in Habitat for Humanity homes.  With every donation, you will receive a chance to win prizes! Gordon Biersch is not only sponsoring the Beer Garden at Earth Day Music Fest, but they are also hosting the After Party featuring some of the musicians from the festival. We are so appreciative of the bands donating their time to make this festival AWESOME! If you are a music fan, do not be late, because every band is great and there is no order, as in headliner!

The 23^rd annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep is scheduled for Saturday, September 17 from 9 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Each year thousands of people participate in the Sweep, South Carolina’s largest one-day litter cleanup of beaches, marshes and waterways.

The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and S.C. Department of Natural Resources organize the statewide event, which is held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. Anyone can participate – individuals, families, schools, youth groups, civic and conservation clubs or businesses. All necessary supplies are provided.

Last year over 4,700 dedicated volunteers removed 24 tons of debris. In its 22-year history, 1,072 tons of litter have been collected and recycled when possible.

To volunteer, contact us! We will meet at Village Surf Shoppe on Atlantic Avenue in Garden City at 9 a.m. Sat. to distribute materials and cards (bring your own gloves), and at Withers Swash at 9 am to clean up there. Data cards can be returned to Village Surf Shoppe once you have completed your sweep.

This annual chili competition will feature categories such as Best Overall, Best Restaurant, People’s Choice, Most Original,Best Theme, Best Use of South Carolina Ingredients, and Hottest Chili. Samples will be available for $1 each.

Entertainment includes performances by Danielle Howle, Sawgrass, Downtribe, Octopus Jones, Pur Cult, and Ten Toes Up.  There will be food, soft drinks, face painting, and inflatables for the kids, as well as displays from local environmental non-profits, businesses, and artists for the whole family.

Cash prizes go to all winners and will be awarded to all first and second place entries in each category. In addition, there will be one Best Overall and one Best Restaurant. This year there will also be a special competition featuring previous winners, requiring them prepare chili with one secret main ingredient.

All proceeds from the Lip-Rippin’ Chilympics Chili Cook-Off will be used for projects of the Grand Strand Surfrider Foundation, an all-volunteer, 501 c 3 non-profit serving the Grand Strand since 1998. All donations are tax-deductible.

The 2010 EDMF put us at 57 vendors and over 6000 attendees; 2011 is on track to be bigger than ever. This year’s event already be the biggest and best one yet; so much so, that we’ve moved the event to the former site of the Pavilion Amusement Park near the waterfront in downtown Myrtle Beach.

NOTE: Due to inclement weather, the Earth Day Music Fest has moved to The Beach House at 12th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach.

The 2010 Earth Day Music Fest & Expo lineup featured Ten Toes Up, Lyndsey Wojcik, Sideways Derby, Ras Bonghi, Sai Collins and the Getaway Drivers, Jordan Loder and Bullfrog. We plan to have these performers and more!
