The weather will be sunny and upper 70′s, the prizes are getting bigger, and we have more entries this year than ever before. Throw in a beautiful view, live music (10 Toes Up, Bonghi and Kingston (reggae), and Kid Drew), the Little Miss Red Hot Chili Pepper Contest and the newly added Waiters Race, and it adds up to a very entertaining Sunday afternoon. This year’s grand prize for the “Chili Master” is a full-day fishing excursion for six on a 34′ private charter boat owned by John & Wayne Strickland, which includes captain and crew, gear, bait and fuel (everything but tipping): a $1,000.00 value!
In addition, we will have a raffle for a sea kayak donated by Surf The Earth Surf Shop of Pawleys Island.
The event begins at noon, and lasts until the chili pots are empty.
This year’s event promises to be the best cookoff yet, and all of our chefs are very secretive about their recipes (which means you will be probably be tasting some of the best and most unique chili recipes ever).
There will be six categories of chili (vegetarian, hottest, most original, Best Restaurant, People’s choice, and Best Overall), and these chilis will be judged by a panel of experienced and celebrity judges.
All participants receive free t-shirts, and our first and second place winners will receive “Chilympic” medals, trophies and great prizes from our sponsors.
The event is free and open to the public. Bring the kids, bring the dogs.
And by the way, its not to late to enter. For more info, call Bruxanne at 333-2034, or email us at Surfridermb@yahoo.com.

Evidently there are some confident chili chefs out there, already proclaiming victory in the upcoming Surfrider “Lip-Rippin’ Chilympics Chili Cookoff” to be held Sunday, October 16 at the Hot Fish Club in Murrells Inlet. Billy Wright, a participant in last years event and winner of 2 medals, has started the verbal assault, informing other interested chili chefs to “not waste their time”.

Curt Hein, last year’s “Chili Master”, has informed us that he will be changing his chili recipe, “just to give the other saps a chance”. This year will mark the 6th year of the Chilympics. The popularity of the event is due to a few factors: a great venue (Hot Fish Club), awesome entertainment (live bluegrass, folk and rock), the Miss Red Hot Chili Pepper contest, and some of the most unique (and tasty) chili recipes ever. This chili cookoff is not a “sanctioned” event, meaning: there is (almost) no restrictions on what you can put in your chili. This format has produced some of the most unique chili dishes that has ever touched the tongue. There will be six categories of chili (vegetarian, hottest, most original, Best Restaurant, People’s choice, and Best Overall).

The cookoff begins at noon and runs until dark. The event is free and open to the public. So if you, or someone you know, makes “the best chili ever” (or you just want to participate for the fun of it), email us at mail@surfridergrandstrand.org, or call Bruxanne at 333-2034.

Every 3rd Saturday in September, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., thousands of South Carolinians clear beaches, rivers, lakes, marshes, and swamps of aquatic debris. The cleanup, organized by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and S.C. Department of Natural Resources, has taken place annually since 1988 ““ when Sea Grant first started it. The Sweep takes place in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup, coordinated by The Ocean Conservancy. Once the Sweep is over, The Ocean Conservancy tallies all of the debris data. This data helps us learn the sources of litter so we can stop pollution before it starts.

We are looking for volunteers to cover Garden City Beach, Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island – if you would like to help us clean the beach, please meet at the Garden City Pier or Surf the Earth in Pawleys at 9 a.m. on Sat. Sept. 17th (bad weather date is scheduled
for Oct. 15th). If you have questions, please contact Bruxanne Hein 333-2034 or bruxanne@yahoo.com. If you can’t make it to one of our sites, please check the “Sea Grant website(outbound link)”:http://www.scseagrant.org/education/education_bsrs.htm#capt to contact a site captain in your area of interest, or take a trash bag to your favorite beach and pick up!

Thanks for your help in keeping our beaches clean!

This is the second surf clinic the Surfrider Foundation has hosted. We will have surfboards, water and sun block available. The M.B. Beach Patrol will give an ocean safety lecture to all participants at 8am. All participants will need to sign up at the event and sign a waiver in order to participate (participants under the age of 17 will need their parents signature).

Special thanks to Surf City, Village Surf Shop and Eternal Wave Surf Shop for their donation of surfboards for this event.
