The 2010 Magnet Project, a collaborative effort with a grant from the town of Surfside Beach and funds from the Guy Daniels Foundation. These magnets were placed in hotel rooms, condos, and rentals throughout the Surfside Beach area to remind visitors of the importance of keeping our beaches healthy and clean. Magnets are also available in Surfside Town Hall for residents. Thanks to the Scholars Academy Biology Club for their assistance in the design and distribution of the magnets, and to Leslie Vanauken for her final design and artwork.

The first sign was hung at the 34th Avenue North beach access in Myrtle Beach. These signs were developed to educate tourists and locals alike on what to do if they encounter a sea turtle, turtle eggs, hatchlings, or crawl marks. The signs include tips and contact numbers. These signs were designed by Anne Wilson of the M.B. State Park, the Surfrider Foundation, and local graphic artist Al McWhite. Proceeds from the sales of the “I’Caretta” book fund this project, and the Beach Safety Committee (City of Myrtle Beach) gave its approval to post these signs at several beach accesses in the city.

Students of Myrtle Beach Intermediate School, along with the assistance of Kim Clayton of Black Water Gallery in Conway, have created a book titled I, Caretta.

The story is about the life of a sea turtle and the many challenges and dangers it must overcome in order to survive.

This book was created by the students of Staci William’s class, as part of a service learning project. These students’ passion for the environment inspired them to write and illustrate this beautiful environmental educational resource about the loggerhead sea turtle and the struggle of the population to survive in our area. This drive has created a school-wide desire to help this threatened species. The project has provided valuable lessons in research, coastal/marine science, English language arts and math skills through the creation of a business plan used to market their ideas.

Proceeds from the illustrated book I, Caretta, will benefit the Save Our Turtles project, which will provide public service announcements on the beach in sea turtle nesting hotspots. Your financial support of I, Caretta will help save the threatened sea turtle population in our area, as well as help create an educational resource that will continue to give back to environmental education extending far beyond the completion of this MBI-born community service project. Most importantly, your support will help a class of ocean loving fourth graders realize their dream.

*Your contribution is a non-profit tax-deductible donation.

* E-mail mail@surfridergrandstrand.org for more.
