Locals got outside today to visit Myrtle Beach State Park to participate in an array of events for the whole family in their Second Annual Park Palooza event was there. Surfrider was there to join in the fun, building a beach fence to protect the dunes.

We will hold fewer general meetings this year, with a different formats from previous years – we will have a general meeting for the first 30 minutes, a topic of interest for 30 minutes and then social/question and answer time following the topic presentation. Executive committee will meet after the general meetings, and also once a month and/or as needed for upcoming projects and events. Any committee work should be done outside of the general meetings as well – we can and should use e-mail and phone for communicating on committee work (details like how many shirts to order, trailer inventory, etc). The meeting schedule for 2009 is as follows:
Tuesday, June 9th, 6:00 p.m. at the Cabana, 5400 N. Ocean Blvd., Myrtle Beach (free cookout!)
Topic: Surf Clinic Demonstration and International Surfing Day activities; new and ongoing projects
Monday, Sept. 14th, 6:30 p.m. at New South Brewing Company (free food!)

The Grand Strand Chapter has adopted a section of Myrtle Beach from 29th Ave. S. to 15th Ave. S. through the SC DHEC Adopt-A-Beach program! We will be responsible for cleaning this section of beach periodically beginning later this fall and through 2009. If you have a group who would like to assist with this effort, please contact us! If you would like to adopt your own beach, please follow this link.
The 9th Annual Lip-Rippin’ Chilympics Chili Cook-Off to benefit the Grand Strand Surfrider Foundation was held Sunday, Oct. 12th at Spuds Waterfront in Murrells Inlet, SC under partly cloudy skies, cool breezes and 29 chilis from 22 competitors from as close as Murrells Inlet to as far away as Charleston. The estimated crowd of 3,000 plus enjoyed music from The Highliners, Sawgrass, The Regime, Free Beer and Ten Toes Up while tasting chilis ranging from Smoked Tuna Chili (Bimini’s) to ExxOFF (Doug Wendel and Matt Ellis) to Chili Gone Wild (Spuds Waterfront).
New South Brewing also wowed the crowd with their Octoberfest, India Pale Ale, White and Nut Brown Ales on tap all day, and we would like to recognize their generous donation once again to this event.
We can’t thank our supporters, competitors and volunteers enough, without whom this event would not be the great success that it is year after year. This year the chapter raised $12,000 to support upcoming projects and programs for 2009. Check our new website at www.surfridergrandstrand.org and sign up for the e-newsletter for future information.

Over 75 volunteers from the Grand Strand Chapter of Surfrider, along with members of the CCU Rugby Team, Delti Chi Fraternity and the Scholars Academy participated in the Withers Swash Sweep on Sat. Sept. 13th. The crowd cleaned the park grounds, marsh areas and low-water areas of trash and debris, mostly bottles and paper trash as well as an old tire rim and shopping cart. Lunch, provided by TBone Terry’s BBQ (thanks for the great grub, Terry!) and Papa John’s Pizza, was a big hit with the volunteers after a long, hot morning of trudging through the mud.
We have a lot of events and projects coming up this spring and summer for which we need a number of volunteers, so we need your help!

Surfrider’s great success with the “I’Caretta” books continues to grow.
Surfrider’s great success with the “I’Caretta” books continues to grow. The hard-back covered book about the life and struggles of the loggerhead turtle was written by the 4th Grade class at Myrtle Beach Intermediate School and their teacher, Staci Williams. The class also produced the illustations for this book, which was coordinated by local artist Kim Clayton, using her unique style of creating art with recycled materials.
This book has been wildly popular with young students, and have been big sellers with schools, museums, children stores, book stores and parks.

All proceeds from the sell of this book goes toward the Myrtle Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and the Sea Turtle Program at the Myrtle Beach State Park. Your contribution is a non-profit tax-deductible donation. E-mail us at mail@surfridergrandstrand.org, or if you’re old fashioned, call the Myrtle Beach Intermediate School (Julie Farmer) at (843) 626-5831.
